CTS Diff questions

Postby XCLR8TN » Mon Jun 21, 2010 1:46 pm

Does anyone know: does the Getrag diff need to be out of a CTS-V? Or can it be from a normal CTS?

I'm looking at this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330409614675&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fmotors.shop.ebay.com%3A80%2F__%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm39%26_nkw%3D330409614675%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

They say they are NEW overstock and they are selling them cheap. They also said it was a limited slip unit but I am trying to get the part # from them to double check (if I can).

Also, I thought I read that the LSD units are a 3.73 gear ratio. This one is listed as 3.23 and on V8Rs site they say:

"We utilize Getrag in our road course and street cars. When sourcing the Getrag look for the 2008 and later models for the latest casting and seal updates. G80 series limited slip GM part numbers:
3:23 - 25978162
3:42 - 25873500
3:23 - 25978162"

Can I use this one that I've linked to on ebay and possibly add 3.73 gearing later (where would I get the gears?)?

Thanks in advance, I'm trying to get the main parts of the build first. I've got engine/tranny/clutch/subframe so far.

edit: I didn't see all the pics down below..

gmpartsdirect.com lists the part number "15793713" as being superceded by "25978161". However, this 259 number is listed as a NON positraction/limited slip differential, and says nothing about being for a CTS.

But if you use the alternate catalog gmpartsdirect.com supplies, the part number "25978162" V8R supplies is also listed for a SRX/STS.

And that part # has bunch of listings:

Item Number MSRP Price
25978162 $973.31 $708.57
Universals & rear axle - Rear axle - Differential - Carrier
Carrier, srx, 3.6l, w/o rear positraction, 3.23 ratio, rwd 2009

25978162 $973.31 $708.57
Universals & rear axle - Rear axle - Differential - Carrier
Carrier, srx, 3.6l, w/rear positraction 2007 - 2008

25978162 $973.31 $708.57
Universals & rear axle - Rear axle - Differential - Carrier
Carrier, srx, 4.6l, w/rear positraction, awd 2009

25978162 $973.31 $708.57
Universals & rear axle - Rear axle - Differential - Carrier
Carrier, sts, sts-v, 3.6l, w/limited slip 2008 - 2010

25978162 $973.31 $708.57
Universals & rear axle - Rear axle - Differential - Carrier
Carrier, sts, sts-v, 4.6l, w/o awd, w/limited slip, 3.23 ratio 2005 - 2007

Maybe someone can enlighten me as to how the same GM part # is listed as a limited slip, and non limited slip?

Will an SRX/STS diff work or are they different?

All I'd like to run is a new[er] style diff that won't break, with an LSD, and preferably 3.73 gearing.

Jessica,

The 3:73 was only available in the CTS-V in the G80 limited slip option. When looking for a diff make sure it is the G80 option with limited slip. These differential were used in several GM vehicles including the SRX and STS/V. The diff we uses is out of a standard CTS.

All of the ratio are available in the G80 option.Choosing a ratio should be determined by desired use, tire size, and transmission ratios. 2.66 or 2.97 first and .5 or .56 final drive.

The Getrag does not offer swappable ratios. If you are looking for more ratio option and different styles of limited slip/posi traction the 8.8 may be your better option. We now offer a PnP axle option for the 8.8 for $1750.

Hope this helped!

I ended up calling a local dealer and giving him that 157 part #, and when he said it didn't come up, I gave him the superceded one and he confirmed what I feared... no limited slip. So that ebay seller either really thinks they have an LSD model, or they are trying to pull a fast one on someone.

Thank you for your response--I'll start looking again! :) I just got really excited when I found that diff on ebay for ~$250.

Hopefully this will help others out as well, because I couldn't find much info on the diff but maybe that's because I wasn't 100% sure what to look for lol! 8-)

edit: is the 8.8 substantially cheaper? I was trying to go with the lighter option.. but I got the part # from a VIN for a 2010 CTS-V diff and it lists at $2,340!

This may be way OBE, but I got my 3.23 LSD out of a Cadillac SRX from LKQ used parts (http://www.lkq.com). IIRC it was around $375, and was in great shape.

HTH, and have a good one,

Have a look at www.car-part.com. I have found several good CTS diffs here with the limited slip option for under $300. The listed price is just a starting point, negotiate !!!! I have found shipping can be negotiated too.
